Christchurch hotel development

Christchurch’s New Sheraton Is Taking Shape

Christchurch’s newest five-star hotel is really starting to take shape — and it is fantastic to see this famous central-city building finally coming back to life.

The former Noah’s Hotel, later Rydges Christchurch, is undergoing a major redevelopment to become the new Sheraton Christchurch, scheduled to open in mid-2027.

For those of us who remember the original Noah’s, this building has some incredible history.

Over the years it welcomed some very famous guests, including Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Diana, King Charles, Sir Elton John and The Beach Boys.

The redeveloped Sheraton will feature around 240 premium guest rooms and suites, along with a signature restaurant, club lounge, event and meeting spaces, fitness facilities and new rooms being constructed on the eastern side of the building.

And then there is what could become one of Christchurch’s great new hospitality attractions — the rooftop bar.

In a lovely nod to the building’s history, the rooftop bar is planned to be called Noah’s.

What a great way to acknowledge the past while bringing the property into a completely new era.

What a Location

The location couldn’t be much better.

Sitting alongside the Ōtākaro Avon River, only a very short walk from Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, Cathedral Square and the heart of the central city, this will be an important addition to Christchurch’s accommodation offering.

With Te Pae attracting major conferences, One New Zealand Stadium bringing more events into the central city and Christchurch continuing to grow as a leisure destination, having another internationally recognised five-star hotel is terrific news.

The photographs show just how much progress is now being made.

After looking at an earthquake-damaged building for so many years, it is genuinely exciting to see it becoming a hotel again.

Bring on 2027.
