Tuatara Coffee — A Great Kiwi Accommodation Coffee Story

Here’s a New Zealand hospitality supplier that caught the HospoGuy eye.

Tuatara Coffee is a locally owned New Zealand coffee company based in the Nelson/Tasman region, and they have developed a particularly interesting niche in the accommodation industry.

Along with supplying cafés and hospitality businesses, Tuatara produces 20g individual plunger coffee sachets specifically suited to motel and hotel rooms.

And they certainly understand our industry — their coffee is already supplied to more than 300 motels and hotels around New Zealand.

For accommodation operators, I like the idea.

Rather than providing guests with only instant coffee, a small individual plunger sachet gives properties another relatively simple way of improving that first coffee of the morning.

And we all know how important that can be!

Tuatara Coffee began in Golden Bay in 2008, before moving its full-time roasting operation to Hope, near Nelson, in 2011.

They produce several blends and use beans sourced from regions including South America, Asia and Africa.

There is another nice Kiwi angle to the business too.

Tuatara describes itself as “Coffee with a Cause”, with the company supporting tuatara conservation, including organisations involved in protecting New Zealand wildlife.

That’s a story international visitors can understand too — New Zealand coffee supporting one of New Zealand’s most extraordinary native species.

For hotel and motel operators looking at ways of improving their in-room coffee offering, this is another New Zealand supplier worth knowing about.

Good coffee, made in New Zealand, already designed for accommodation rooms — and helping conservation along the way.

Very HospoGuy.
